Happy 2013

Things my bilateral PAOs can do now (encouragement for those at the beginning of their hip journey):

1.  Skate in 3 holiday ice shows  - not to mention all of the practices - with my friends who have normal hips
2.  Hydroblades (see photo above)
3.  Walk through the mall with heavy bags
4.  Hike in the Japanese garden
5.  Run after my cat
6.  Clean the entire house
7.  Stand while cooking an entire meal
8.  Yoga
9.  Pilates
10.  Elliptical trainer

Terri, I have been searching for a PAO recoverer who was over forty for weeks now. I was diagnosed w/ hip dysplasia over a month ago by a hip specialist in Hamilton, Ontario (Canada) and will be heading to London, Ontario for the next specialist app't on April 15th. The former doctor believes that the PAO will be the best bet for me. I just turned 44 and I've been a bit nervous (as you were) reading all the blogs from younger candidates. thank you for your brave and candid updates. I read through almost everything and even printed your 'lists!' I'm hoping I can have the PAO as it has been almost 2 years since the major problems for me and pain getting worse in both hips as well...Thanks again & keep on blogging!! Christine

Hi Christine - A PAO may not be a perfect solution, but the outcome is more related to your joint space and extent of damage to your hip vs. your age. If you are generally healthy otherwise your age won't be a huge factor although your recovery may take longer.. Just be sure your surgeon has a lot of experience doing PAOs, and be very patient in your recovery. I look forward to hearing about your progress. Best, Terri
